Wish Dragon Netflix Movie Review
If you had 3 wishes…
What would you wish for? Personally, I think it would be hard for me to choose what I would wish for. Why? Because I have watched enough movies to know wishes have consequences. (In movies you also have to be really specific about how you word your wish. Haha!) But in Netflix’s new movie Wish Dragon, we get to see what a young boy named, Din, would wish for. Wish Dragon arrives on Netflix on June 11th. Here is my Wish Dragon Netflix Movie Review. (Spoiler-free.)
My Wish Dragon Netflix Movie Review
If you have watched Aladdin or any other kids movie that involves a genie then Netflix’s new movie, Wish Dragon, will be very familiar to you. Sadly for me, that is a little disappointing. (Apparently, the Chinese fable Wish Dragon is based on also inspired the story of Aladdin.) While I find the more modern take on this story interesting I feel the movie had so much potential for it to be unique and unlike all the other genie movies, but it didn’t get there. Din (Jimmy Wong) makes the same wishes as all the others to impress a girl, and Long (John Cho) the Wish Dragon cannot grant certain wishes and just wants to be wished free. (Ya know because he has the itty bitty living space going on. Haha!)
While the story of Wish Dragon may be repetitive its saving grace is its animation, laughs, and message. Wish Dragon’s animation is beautiful, vibrant, and reminds me of Abominable. The movie is also full of jokes that will make the whole family laugh out loud. The characters Din and Long are so funny and Jimmy Wong and John Cho voiced their respective characters perfectly. Lastly, the message is a great one for kids. Showing that it is important to be yourself, to be kind to others, not be greedy, and to be humble.
My Rating and Parent’s Guide
Even though I was a little disappointed in Wish Dragon my kids really liked it. So, I give Wish Dragon a C+. The animation is beautiful and the movie is funny. I just wish (haha) the story had been a little different from all of the other genie movies out there. Is there anything in the movie parents should be on the lookout for? There are some parts of the movie that contain fighting and some bad guys that might be slightly scary for younger viewers.
