False Positive Movie Review: A Rough One To Watch

They did say having kids wouldn’t be easy

After watching False Positive that joke is funny yet not funny at the same time. In June Hulu released a new movie titled False Positive. It stars Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, and Pierce Brosnan. After watching the trailers for the movie I was intrigued, but my intrigue was quickly replaced with “What the heck?!”. Haha! If you haven’t seen False Positive you may want to read my False Positive movie review below first. It may save you a couple of hours of your time. Haha! P.S. Since False Positive has been out for a while this post does contain spoilers.

False Positive Movie Review

Whew. What did I watch? Haha! This movie is crazy, weird, and sadly one I will probably never watch again. When watching the trailer I thought it was going to be a horror movie, and I was going to be spending the night sleeping with the light on. (Boy was I wrong. Haha!) There is so much jam-packed into this movie it is almost hard for me to figure out where to start. It is supposed to be a horror/thriller/mystery movie, but truthfully I just found it painful to watch. I love thriller/mystery movies but False Positive is something else. It actually reminds me very much of Rosemary’s Baby and the movie made me angrier than anything else. Why? Because the heart of the movie is something women deal with all the time. Especially during pregnancy and childbirth, and that is not being listened to, not believed, gaslighted, and violated.

But lets take a step back shall we

In False Positive, Lucy (the amazing Ilana Glazer) is having a hard time getting pregnant with her husband Adrian (Justin Theroux). So, they go to a fertility doctor, Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). They become pregnant with triplets, twin boys, and a single girl. Being told that another pregnancy might not be in the cards and that she should have a selective reduction Lucy decides she wants to keep the single girl, her Wendy. But, Lucy keeps feeling like something is off during her pregnancy.

She is passed over on a big project at work because of being pregnant. Even though she did all the work to get the project. (This happens all the time in real life by the way.) Throughout her pregnancy, Lucy feels she is being lied to, manipulated, followed, and more. In the end, lucy finds out that her husband and Doctor lied to her and that Dr. Hindle violated her, and has his own motives when it comes to Lucy’s pregnancy.

The whole movie is one big trigger warning

As a woman who has had kids the psychological aspects of the movie that Lucy goes through are just really painful to watch and hit on so many nerves. The gaslighting Lucy receives has been experienced by so many women during pregnancy, childbirth, and afterward. Being told you are wrong, your crazy, your wishes not being respected, and your body not being respected and violated. It’s all in False Positive and it is like a nightmare. Throw in the movie is very slow, but by the end is going 60 miles an hour, and the only good performance from an actor in the movie is from Ilana Glazer. It made me sad. There are so many ways the story of False Positive could have gone and it would have been so much better.

My Rating

(Sigh) While I really enjoyed Ilana Glazer’s performance in False Positive the movie itself is a very slow painful burn, but by the end, it will have you wondering WTF did you just watch. Haha! For me, False Positive is a big nope. But that is the great thing about movies. Even though I do not like it someone will, but I still have to rate it a C-.

If you have seen False Positive what did you think? Let me know in the comments.
